New Chamber Logo
For
all of its 70 years, the logo of the Calumet City Chamber
of Commerce has been the silhouette of an Indian chief
and peace pipe. This spring we had a logo contest, and the
winner is artist Jen Weinshenker. Her winning design
appears below, in our banner, and on the masthead of our
newsletter. Another update is the
renaming of our newsletter from The Business Beacon
to The Business Link.

Membership Growth
We're growing, but we could use your help! If you know of a
business that would benefit from participating in our "New
Beginnings" Chamber, please refer them to our office, and we'll
follow up and call on them. Let's see if each member can bring in
one new member this year so we all benefit in sharing our
resources as a team of local businesses. Remember, TEAM stands for
"Together Everyone Accomplishes More!"
New Calumet Area Business Incubator Offices Being Planned!
A new Calumet Area Business Incubator office complex is in
the planning and development stage, supported through a steering
committee to include the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce, the city
of Calumet City, CenterPoint Inc., a small business development
center at Governors State University, South Suburban College's
Business & Career Institute, and various other supporting resource
agencies. Wayne DeGraaf, VP at Illiana Financial Credit Union, and
Dennis Gilliam, River Oaks general manager, originated the concept,
the purpose of which is to encourage and make available shared
office space and office amenities at a reduced cost to new and small
businesses. The incubator offices being developed include space in
the Westwood College Office Building located in River Oaks Shopping
Center. DeGraaf said, "This location is perfect for the
small-business owner who wants to graduate from a SOHO (Small
Office/Home Office) into office space that is more conducive to a
professional image with all the local amenities surrounding this
area. It's also perfect for those small-business owners who feel
that having a suburban office in addition to their Chicago office
would save travel time, be more convenient, and provide shared-cost
savings." Look for more information and updates in future issues of
the Chamber's "Business Beacon" newsletter.
New Calumet City Map
The new Calumet City map is now available! This is another
joint effort between your Calumet City Chamber and the Mayor of
Calumet City, Michelle Qualkinbush. Maps may be picked up at
City Hall and at the new Chamber office. This year we have
included information on the various city departments and their phone
numbers along with a listing of various businesses that helped
support the production and printing. Thank you to all who made it
possible through their generous financial support, and to those who
worked on the project. This is a full-color map of which you can be
proud.
Calumet City Community Guide Coming Soon!
A joint communications project in the form of our premier
edition of the Calumet City Community Guide is being produced
through the efforts of the Calumet City Chamber of Commerce, the
Calumet City Mayor's office, and Illiana Financial Credit Union.
Wayne DeGraaf, VP of Illiana and committee chair who is coordinating
the 5,000-issue 40- to 50-page guide said, "It will contain articles
about the city, its departments, emergency phone numbers, schools,
parks, history, maps, directories, etc., along with various articles
and information about the "new" Chamber of Commerce under the new
direction of President Janice Minton-Kutz." The guide also will
contain the names, addresses and phone numbers of all Calumet City
businesses, as well as Chamber members. A personal direct-mail
letter outlining the ad costs to support the Community Guide is
being sent to all Calumet City businesses inviting them to
participate by purchasing an ad to highlight their business.
Deadline for ads is July 15, 2006. The Mayor's office and
Illiana already have made a sizeable contribution toward the cost of
publishing. The publisher will assist businesses who need help in
designing an ad at no extra charge. This will be a full-color guide
for the years 2006/07. It will be available through businesses, the
city, and at our new Chamber office located in the Westwood College
building in the River Oaks Shopping Center, 80 River Oaks Center,
ARC 6 (lower level).
